چکیده
Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics of a low-molecular-weight fluid (squalane) are compared with experimental measurements in both the linear (Newtonian) and nonlinear (non-Newtonian) regimes. The experimental and simulation data are shown to follow the same time-temperature superposition master curve. This represents the first comparison of the nonlinear rheology predicted by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics with experiment, and is thus the first experimental test of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations in the nonlinear regime.

Nonequilibrium dynamics and fluctuation-dissipation relation in a sheared fluid
The nonequilibrium dynamics of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture in a simple shear flow is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The range of temperature T investigated covers both the liquid, supercooled, and glassy states, while the shear rate g covers both the linear and nonlinear regimes of rheology. The results can be interpreted in the context of a nonequilibrium, schemati...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulations of the rheology of normal decane, hexadecane, and tetracosane
Extensive nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out for liquid decane, hexadecane, and tetracosane at densities corresponding to atmospheric pressure and near ambient temperatures. The strain-rate-dependent viscosity has been obtained for strain rates ranging over several orders of magnitude. At high strain rate, the viscosities for all alkanes studied here have simila...
متن کاملMicrostructure and Rheology Relationships for Shear Thickening Colloidal Dispersions
The non-Newtonian shear rheology of colloidal dispersions is the result of the competition and balance between hydrodynamic (dissipative) and thermodynamic (conservative) forces that lead to a nonequilibrium microstructure under flow. We present the first experimental measurements of the shear induced microstructure of a concentrated, near hard-sphere colloidal dispersion through the shear thic...
متن کاملInhomogeneities in Sheared Ultrathin Lubricating Films
Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics computer simulations have been used to study nanoscopically confined oligomer films under shear. Beyond the well-known density layering across such films, other structural and dynamical inhomogeneities exist across such films and are discussed here. When these filmsare subjected to strong shear flows, slip appears at the confining surfaces or inside thepore, de...
متن کاملHydrogen bonding in ethanol under shear.
We study the dependence of viscosity of ethanol on shear rate using constant volume and constant pressure nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, with the emphasis of the interrelationship between breaking, stability, and alignment of hydrogen bonds and shear thinning at high shear rates. We find that although the majority of hydrogen bond breakings occur at low shear rates, we do not ob...
